Should You Clean Gutters in Winter?
Updated
Short answer
Only when a clog is causing real trouble and the gutters can be reached safely. Rockford averages 37.1 inches of snow and 135.8 freezing nights a year, and the University of Minnesota Extension warns that anyone on a winter roof risks injury. The better plan is a late-fall cleaning.
When winter work makes sense
- A thaw shows water pouring over a clogged gutter onto steps or a walkway, where it will refreeze.
- A downspout is frozen solid and meltwater is backing up.
- Leaves from a late-dropping oak filled the gutter after the fall cleaning.
When it doesn't
Gutters packed with ice can't be scooped, and chipping ice out damages them. Ladders slip on frozen ground. If you have an ice dam rather than a clog, the fix is different: see ice dams and gutters and HomeGuide's removal costs of $200 to $2,400.
The plan that works
Clean in mid to late November after the leaves are down, check downspout extensions before the first snow, and look again on a thaw day.
Quick answers
Can gutters be cleaned when frozen?
Not well. Frozen debris can't be scooped and chipping damages the gutter. Wait for a thaw, or deal with ice dams separately.
