Downspout Cleaning and Unclogging in Rockford, IL

Short answer

Where downspouts clog
Almost always in one of three places: the outlet where the gutter drains into the downspout, the elbows that kick the downspout back toward the wall, and the bottom elbow or the joint with an extension. Maple seeds and wet leaves bridge across the opening, then everything behind them compacts. In older Rockford neighborhoods with small 2 by 3 inch downspouts it happens faster than on newer 3 by 4 inch ones.
How it is cleared
- Clear the outlet from the top and check the gutter run feeding it.
- Flush with a hose from the top. If water backs up, find the clog by tapping and listening, or by taking the elbow off.
- Pull the bottom elbow or extension and clear it by hand. Elbows are held with a few screws and go back the same way.
- For a stubborn plug, a plumber's snake from the bottom works better than more pressure from the top.
- Test again at full flow and reattach everything, with the extension pointing away from the house.
Downspouts that run underground
Many Rockford-area homes send downspouts into buried pipe that runs to the yard or curb. If the top is clogged, the crew should clear it from above so the debris doesn't get washed into the buried line. A buried line that is already plugged needs a drain-cleaning snake or jetter, which some gutter crews carry and some refer out. Ask before you book.
Where the water should end up
The U.S. Department of Energy's building science guidance is to carry downspout water to sloping ground more than 5 feet from the foundation, or to an underground catchment more than 10 feet away that is not tied into the foundation drain. A clean downspout that dumps water against the basement wall is still a problem; see downspout repair and extensions.
Common questions
Downspout Cleaning and Unclogging: questions
How do I know if my downspout is clogged?
Water spills over the gutter near the downspout in a rain, the downspout makes no sound or only a trickle comes out the bottom, or the gutter holds standing water beside the outlet.
How much does it cost to unclog a downspout?
About $25 to $75 per downspout to flush (Housecall Pro, 2026) and $60 to $150 to clear clogged downspouts (HomeGuide). Angi lists downspout cleaning at $50 to $100.
Can a pressure washer clear a downspout?
It can drive a clog deeper, especially into a buried line. Clear from the bottom elbow first, then flush with a garden hose.
