Sagging Gutters: Causes and Fixes

Updated

Short answer

Gutters sag when hangers pull out of the fascia under the weight of wet debris and ice, or when the fascia behind them rots. Re-hanging costs $75 to $300 (HomeGuide), or $50 to $150 as a minor repair during a cleaning (Housecall Pro).

Causes

  • Old spike-and-ferrule hangers backing out of the wood over the years.
  • Hangers spaced too far apart for snow and ice loads.
  • Rotted fascia that no longer holds a screw.
  • Ladders leaned directly on the gutter.
  • Ice: NOAA counts 135.8 days a year with a freezing low at the Rockford airport.

The fix

Replace failed hangers with screw-in hidden hangers into solid wood, close enough together to carry winter loads, and reset the slope toward the downspout at the same time. If the screws won't bite, the fascia needs repair first; see fascia rot.
